Road repair works & traffic hindrances

Most of us are familiar are with the poor state of roads, medians & pedestrian walk at many places in the city. Chennai's roads are further damaged by works undertaken by the city's agencies such as metro water, cable laying by telephone companies and not to forget the constant beautification work by the corporation. Though we are familiar with this ritual that happens year after year, it is time the corporation undertakes these repairs without causing hindrance to traffic.

Its very surprising most of these repair works are undertaken through the peak hours causing trouble to motorists and causing chaos in the movement of traffic. Already the city roads are burdened by large number of motorists and slow moving traffic because of poor roads.

Also the workers are made to work in poor conditions with their lives at risk. They are made to work in the heat, with the road temperatures getting higher as the tar heats up and emissions from large number of vehicles push the temperature up, not to mention workers are exposed to high levels of pollution.

In one particular place work was being undertaken in a busy school zone causing traffic congestion and chaotic driving by motorists.  Its time the corporation learns a lesson from other world cities where repair works are undertaken only during the nights or off-peak hours, this way more work gets done without hindrance to traffic and the workers themselves are not exposed to much risk as during peak hours.

Its also interesting to note that while telephones and internet companies were asked to work at night, the corporation does not think twice to dig up roads or carry out  repair or beautification works in high traffic routes during the peak hours.
