ANGLING
Jungle Lodges, which is a Government company, has
taken 31 km. of river Cauvery on lease from the
Forest Department. Being a perennial river originating from the forest, the
water is clean and forms an ideal niche for the largest freshwater sportfish on
earth viz., the golden mahseer (Tor mussullah). Upto 105-pounders are caught
regularly. This place is the favourite refuge for an exclusive and expanding
tribe of British fishermen. "Catch and Release" system is practiced
here with a view towards conservation. The foreigners prefer to come here during
November-March, even though April-May also offers good fishing opportunities
except that it can get rather hot. Among the three camps, the best fishing
opportunities are at Galibore (January-April). Only a limited number of
fishermen are allowed at any given time. At Bheemeshwari, fishing opportunities
are best during October-January. You can also migrate from Bheemeshwari to
Doddamakali and do fishing there also.
This river is
well protected and attracts anglers from all over the world. The mahseer gives
the angler a terrific fight, which has earned it the sobriquet of the underwater
tiger. Here in the Cauvery, there are some fish,
which even reach over 180 pounds.
The thrill of a
big fish masheer hooked and thrashing about in the water to the tune of a fast
emptying reel is a joy only anglers understand. Amateur anglers can still enjoy
themselves with some help from our experienced and skilled guides and anglers.
Another important aspect of the fishing here is that the guides are always with
the anglers. If you are ready to spend a few days there, then you are taken to
different places each day in a boat called "Coracle" for masheer
fishing so that you could enjoy the fishing and also manage to catch a big one.
