1.Lonely Planet @lonelyplanet
Let’s kick off with the big guns. These guys based at Lonely Planet HQ down in Melbourne Australia work in tangent with their counterparts in Oakland and London to Tweet and retweet the best travel tips, advice and guidebook info. If you’re still unsure of Twitter, skip the in-between and explore their website. (w) www.lonelyplanet.com

2. NewYorkology @NewYorkology

If you have a soft spot for the big apple then you’re going to love the tweets transmitted into the wider world by NewYorkology.com editor, Amy Langfield. Without sounding clichéd, the activities, openings and general fun going on in NYC recommended right here, is second to none. The up and coming gastronomical recommendations are particularly cool. (w) www.newyorkology.com

3.Virgin Atlantic @VirginAtlantic

Just like the man behind this global brand, this Virgin twitter feed is wonderfully tongue in cheek, so much so that the profile opens with the line: “Hello Gorgeous.” It’s entertaining and if you want to be the first to know about the flash sales to and from locations like Australia, the Caribbean, the USA, the UK, Asia and Africa, this is the place. 4.Simon Calder @_SimonCalder

He’s the Senior Travel Editor for The Independent and an rather infamous expert on all things travel related. Biking around the biggest travel conferences in London and then off to the airport, Mr Caulder never rests and whether he’s presenting a groundbreaking BBC TV series or blogging away, you know it’s going to be the good stuff. There’s obviously a tie in the newspaper here but like all true travel writers, he throws in a fair share of meaty, personal opinion too. (w) www.independent.co.uk/travel

5.Nat Geo Traveler @NatGeoTraveler

You’ll find a fair few Nation Geographic Twitter accounts but this is the original, Washington DC based profile with a top team of three behind it. Said team include @Marilyn_Res, @giopalatucci and @SeaFox4, so you get three of the best for the price of one with this option! Like is says on the masthead, these guys championed sustainable travel before it was cool and today they spread the word about seriously cultural, and authentic journeys. 6. BBC Travel @BBC_Travel

The website attached to this badger is (annoyingly) unavailable to UK residents because it’s a part of the commercial, worldwide service. Twitter however trumps this restriction with bite sized insights into what the rest of the planet are enjoying. Expect BBC quality travel journalism, along with footage and photos that’ll make you pack a suitcase. (w) www.bbc.com/travel

7. Michael and Marlys @ParisBuFF

The couple behind this feed should be your first and last stop for information about all things Paris related. They adopted the city and in addition to writing all about Paris movie walks, they also hook you up with the best budget tips around and advice about getting the most out of your trip to the city. You’ll find them hanging out around Butte Montmartre in the city of lights and online, here. (w) parismoviewalks.co.uk

8. Carol Driver @Caroldtravels
Since taking the reigns as Editor of TNT Magazine Ms. Driver has brought the publication well and truly into the Twitter-sphere where it belongs. It’s not all about ex-pats in London however as Carol also edits justluxe.com and reflects on writing her way around the world back in 2009. Clearly an adventurer at heart, she’s a fun and independent traveler to follow. (w) www.justluxe.com

9. msnbc.com Travel @msnbc_travel

Another heavy weight in the world of all things Twitter, msnbc.com trawls the world of travel and relays the most pertinent points to you in 140 character bursts, on the mini travel blog website. There are also regional spin offs for most countries, so if you take your Twitter with a side of regional good times, give them a Google. For the best overall insight, check this option out. 10. Amanda Rose Williams @flyingrose1984

World, I’d like you to meet Amanda - a very lovely flight attendant with American Airlines who’s managed to mix her daily globe trotting with an incredibly informed travel Twitter feed, not to mention a hefty website to back it all up. I hope there’s no PR team behind this, but even if there is, it’s a great resource and well worth a follow, not to mention a retweet from time to time. (w) www. travelbooking.at
